When can babies eat rice?

Rice is fine from 6 months and a gentle base for curries, stews and stir-fry flavours — cooked soft and slightly sticky, it's easier for babies than you'd think.

Is rice a choking hazard?

Low: individual grains are too small to block an airway. Clumpy overcooked rice actually helps early self-feeding.

On arsenic: rice itself is fine as part of a varied diet, but rotate grains (oats, pasta, couscous) rather than serving rice daily, and skip rice-milk drinks for under-5s.

Is rice a common allergen?

No — rice is not one of the top-9 food allergens, which makes it a low-stress food to serve alongside deliberate allergen introductions.

How to serve rice by stage

6+ months

Soft, sticky, slightly overcooked rice pressed into balls or fingers, or stirred into dal.

9+ months

Sticky rice clumps for raking and pincer practice; mild risotto.

12+ months

Rice with family curries and stir-fries; fried rice with peas and egg.
